Last night, Goodnight gave me the perfect answer to a question I asked her.
We’ve been attending high school football games for several years. I like to attend at least one game per season at Angel’s alma mater. They always get a huge crowd, the team ends up being pretty good most seasons and it’s a fun atmosphere. I would get either Angel’s Letter Sweater or Letter Jacket out of storage and let Goodnight wear it to the game.
Besides Angel’s high school, I’ve taken GN to games at high schools were she knows some of the kids.
Last night, I asked her which game she wanted to attend. She didn’t have to give it any thought. Her answer was immediate. “I have my own high school now, Gram.”
I knew that. I just wanted to see what she would say. If I had chosen a game for last night, she may have been less willing to go to any of them.
GN’s high school was playing an away game, but the away school campus is even closer to our house than GN’s school, so it was a short trip. As soon as we got out of the car, I heard, “OMG!! Grammy, I’ll be right back.” She ran to hug a friend and then walked back to me.
GN: Grammy? Do you care if I sit with my friends? I didn’t mind.
That’s why we were there. Things don’t change much. Kids dress up in their school colors, stand through most of the game, make up their own cheers, gather at the concession stand, walk to the opposing team’s bleachers to see if they know anyone or just sit there a minute to heckle.
It was a beautiful night really. It was cool enough to wear a jacket and sit on a blanket, but the air was fresh and there was no rain or wind. Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours.
I love football!

Oh me too. I don’t miss it as much as I used to, which I guess is good. But this time of year the memories of Friday nights are so strong.
I love the word ‘bleachers’ – it always makes me smile. I had no idea what it meant until I went to a Pow Wow at a reservation in the Wind River area about 16 years ago …
I’m not a huge football fan, but I do enjoy your enthusiasm!
