Goodnight and I went out to a concert in the park last night. Since we weren’t able to do the outdoor concert in my grandmother’s home town because of the weather, we decided to try it again at our local park. Last night it was a German Brass Band – a 35-piece band and three soloists to sing some German songs.
We took a picnic supper to the park and settled in for the music. A lot of other folks had the same idea.
Goodnight brought a book to read and asked me ahead of time if that would be okay with me. I didn’t mind. One can read and listen to music at the same time. At least she was there with me and enjoying some fresh air. She put down her book once in a while to watch, so I know she was interested a little bit.
The band was really wonderful. I heard a lovely song I hadn’t heard before: “Sag Dankeschön mit roten Rosen.” It means ‘Say thank you with red roses.”
As we turned into our driveway after the concert it was already quite dark. Suddenly Goodnight said, “No Gram! Wait! The deer. Go slow. . .”
I turned into the driveway at a snail’s pace. Sure enough, my ’lawn ornaments were moving about and when the headlights were on them, they gathered and waited. There were five of them. I waited too, just to see what they would do. Goodnight was running the camera.
One by one they jumped the fence into the neighbor’s yard. You can see on ready to jump. It still amazes me how easily they got over.
Fun summer night, though. No TV, no video games, but good family time together.

I love outdoor concerts (but I’m more of a Rock or World Music type) and the moving lawn ornaments are icing on a German Chocolate Cake of an evening.
Carol: I would go if there was a different kind of music, too. It just happened to be the German Brass Band this week. There are two concerts left for this summer. Not sure what kind of music it will be. The lawn ornaments were fun to watch. I’m up late with my nose in the genealogy again. GN is at a sleepover, so I’m taking advantage of the time. I found another immigrant ship!
You are the super sleuth!
Hmm funny how deer and your genealogy seem to go together!
Would love to know about your immigrant ship(s) – I found a couple for my ancestors and was delighted to find pictures of them too.
How I wish I had a time machine though, to be able to pop back and say hello and to ask some questions.
Dancing: I wish for the same time machine! If you find it, let me know. We could travel together.
I used to enjoy going to park concerts in California. There’s just something about listening to an orchestra or jazz band outdoors.
